Week Nine Pennants Report
Two from three ain't bad
DA SPUD FILZ …….. featuring the WIRKZ of the BROZ BIRKZ!
On a superb sunny day Division One were again up against the “might” of the undefeated competition leaders Enoggera. Enoggera were looking to keep their record intact and we were looking to reverse the first round loss. Both sides were at full strength so the game was likely to provide some answers for future weeks. But neither side would have foreseen what happened.
In a nutshell – Red Hill up 76 to 36. Wins on all 3 rinks. Superb bowls from all the team.
Chappie’s rink of Axe, Jet and Roycey only lost 6 ends to Darryl Weymouth and prevailed 25 to 9.
Squirta’s crew of Tank, Marto and Haydos only lost 7 ends to young gun Ryan Digby and won 27 to 10.
On the third rink Macca’s team of Spud, Walshie and Kitch again met the gun rink of Lawson, Slater, Leon and Conlon. Two 5’s, a 4 and a 3 gave us plenty of cushion to keep them at bay and win 24 to 17.
So a great effort that ensures next week’s game against Ferny Grove is sudden death for second spot in the final and hopefully battle no.3 against Enoggera. Some terrific games coming up.
And now to the BOG. The prize this week, which was procured by the Spud from a bargain bin at St Vinnie’s, is a limited edition DVD (only one ever sold) called “20 to 1 – Shane Fordham’s Greatest Games”. It provides 60 hours of some of the most “riveting” bowls action you could ever see and no doubt was the inspiration for everyone to play well. The nominees this week come from the upfront men – Spud, Axe and Marto. But really anyone could have been in the running. And the winner is ………Marto. Well done mate, especially for recent efforts. Perhaps you can watch the DVD with your skip and he’ll be able to spin the 60 hours out to 120.
Till next week – enjoy life
DIV 2 @ Home V Samford – (thanks Warren Birksy for the report!)
Another beautiful winter’s day and the Powerful Owls from Samford made their way to Red Hill for the penultimate round of pennants for 2017.
The Owls were not totally out of contention for a finals spot, BUT a win by the Rollers would guarantee them a home grand final so there was plenty to play for.
The stars of the Div 2 Rollers, PC’s team of Ando, Razor (new to the high performers), Doodle and PC himself, led the way. They jumped out with a 6 on the very first end and were never threatened after that.
All the boys played well on this rink with Razor fitting in beautifully at 2. The final score was a thumping 33-18 win. A great start to the big day.
Ned Kelly again skipped another very strong team that included Mickey D, Goofy and Aka. This one was much tighter. Our boys were down 9-11 after 11 ends but then scored 11 shots on the next 4 ends to scoot away 20-11.
From there the result was never in doubt. Mike continued improving and Aka drew some excellent shots as the Rollers went away to win 22-17.
The final rink welcomed back Doc Halliday. Clearly the Doc still had his wobbly boots on after getting off his cruise ship just yesterday. Early on he didn’t get much support from his team either. However, Almighty, Birksy and Matty all found better form as the afternoon progressed.
The home town boys were down by 7-19 after 15 ends and opposition skip Barry Maher had it on a string. However the last 6 ends belonged to the home team, picking up 13 shots to 1. Thus a 20 all draw resulted.
Overall a great win by the Rollers 75-55. A home final now guaranteed but work to be done next week at Ferny Grove, who are trying hard to be our GF opponent.
If our Div 2 team shows the same form in the big one that they showed today then there is no being beaten, whoever the opponent!
GO THE HILL!!
DIV 5 Away @ Toowong – (thanks Gregory Birksy for the report!)
Div 5 travelled to Toowong knowing that a win would clinch a home final.
All team members were keen to perform at their best. We were greeted with sunny skies, a slight breeze and good conditions
Unfortunately, the rollers came up against a very determined Toowong
side and after a valiant effort went down 69-55.
Our team of ‘Killer’ Kable, Green dog, Smokin’ Joe and skipped by Al Daniel started well and led 4-3 after four ends. The opposition then went into overdrive winning the next eight ends and taking a commanding lead of 18-4. The game evened out over the concluding nine ends with the rollers trying hard to clawback the deficit, eventually losing 15-26.
On rink 3, Dave Lee, ‘Shirley’ Birks, The Kirkinator and led by the ‘Youngster’ started badly and after six ends trailed 1-8. The score would have been much worse if not for the Kirkinator, who was at least getting his bowls into the head. However, as the game progressed and with some encouraging words from skip Wally, all players settled down. Some excellent lead bowls from Dave were well backed up by all team members. The Rollers were still behind 9-11 after twelve ends and then gave away four shots on the fifteenth end to trail 10-16. Not looking good. The Red Hill spirit then came to life with the Rollers winning the final six ends to run out convincing 27-16 winners. It was a very tough battle.
Our final team of ‘Cunno’, Danny K, Fillet and Bob Morton found the going tough from the start. After seven ends they trailed 2-11 and
after fifteen ends 5-23. A slight comeback over the concluding ends saw the Rollers go down 13-27.
A disappointing overall result but we were simply outplayed by a better team on the day. The good news is we live to fight another day ……
Bring on Ferny Grove at home next week with a Grand Final berth at home the Grand Prize!
